Law Clerk

Joseph Frengel is a law clerk at Fleming Law. He is a recent law school graduate and a current candidate for admission to the Pennsylvania Bar. He assists the attorneys in preparing clients’ cases.

Joseph holds a Bachelor of Arts in Africology and African American Studies from Temple University. Temple’s Africology department is the first of its kind and a leader in the field, and this program entails Afrocentric study of Africa and the African diaspora. Joseph also holds a Juris Doctor from the University of Maryland School of Law. He focused on immigration law during his legal studies, taking courses in immigration law and asylum law, working as a student attorney in the immigration clinic, and spending a summer as an intern with a Maryland immigration practice. He also studied international human rights law. His article “The Haitian Revolution, Anti-Haitianism, and the Evolution of Exclusionary Immigration Policy in the Untied States” is published in Volume 20 of the Intercultural Human Rights Law Review. The article discusses how discrimination against Haitian immigrants has been at the center of development of the United States’ exclusionary immigration policy, how this is a continuation of western backlash against Haiti for the Haitian Revolution, and how these exclusionary policies violate international asylum law. The article argues for asylum law that is more friendly towards refugees and increased immigration pathways.

Outside of work, Joseph enjoys spending time with his wife and exploring new places. He has a background in competitive powerlifting and enjoys going to the gym. He enjoys watching sports, especially college football. He also enjoys reading about Haitian history. Joseph is learning Haitian Creole and can speak it at an intermediate level.
